Canon MP Navigator EX is licensed as freeware for the Windows (32-bit and 64-bit) operating system / platform from camera software without restrictions. Canon MP Navigator EX 5.1.1 is available to all software users as a free download (Freeware).
I see that others have had this problem with other Canon printers. My Canon Printer/Copier/Scanner is MX870 and my MP Navigator EX v. Since I upgraded to High Sierra, the Canon software doesn't launch-no reason given (and I can't understand the error report the Mac creates to send to Apple). I use that software for scanning, and it has loads of nice features. I read the thread here about this with other Canon printers, and yes, through System PrefsPrinters and Scanners I can scan with the printer, and modify some settings (such as resolution dpi), but it's not as nice as the Canon software. The Canon website is not helpful here as to an answer or a current download to fix it. Instead, I worked backward through the software versions Canon offered for the different Mac OSX versions, and nothing was listed for Sierra or High Sierra, but with El Capitan, there was MP Navigator EX 3.1.5.

I downloaded and installed that, and it has two apps it installs, one called MP Navigator EX 3.1 Opener, and one called MP Navigator EX 3.1. The former doesn't launch, the latter does, it and it works so far for scanning and saving documents, pictures, etc. So there is some info for you, if you also have my problem, until Canon issues an upgraded version of their software. It might be the case, since they're still putting out 'new' versions of the PIXMA All-in-one printers. Here is the printer model on High Sierra. There is no MP Navigator EX software listed, or printer drivers offered for this device with High Sierra.
Whatever you have working now, may or may not continue to work with any subsequent Security updates for High SIerra. If this Canon software is 32-bit, it has a dim future with Mojave — if you are considering it.
You might evaluate the 64-bit version of which supports the MX870 without any Canon software/drivers installed. It uses jpeg compression to accelerate scans. If you are satisfied with VueScan, it would be a means to use this device with later versions of macOS than High Sierra.

Disclaimer: I have owned VueScan Professional since 2012 without any update costs. I receive no compensation, or any other consideration from Hamrick Software for recommending VueScan here.
I guess I should have known that other apps could run the scanner part of my printer and do what my Canon software does. I purchased the pro version of VueScan. I'll check out the features soon. I do a lot of scanning and have used that to replace paper copies of my receipts and important papers, shredding the paper copies.
I am not thrilled at all about having to get new versions of all my software in the future due to Mojave, and I'll likely delay upgrading to Mojave for as long as possible, for that reason. But at least this new scanner software will run for it. Thanks again. I am not thrilled at all about having to get new versions of all my software in the future due to Mojave, and I'll likely delay upgrading to Mojave for as long as possible, for that reason Not sure what you mean by that. I've only had two apps not work with Mojave and both were system hack type of apps to modify the Finder interface, cDock and XtraFinder. I wouldn't jump into Mojave as soon as it comes out but check the RoaringApps.com website frequently to see what apps work or don't work.
It's the macOS that comes after Mojave that will not work with 32 bit apps and cause a lot of upgrading for users. But that's over a year + away. Apple Footer. This site contains user submitted content, comments and opinions and is for informational purposes only.
